Petra is a beautiful offshore village, which has evolved into a tourist resort where tradition and tourist development meet. It is located in the North part of Lesvos Island and the architectural tradition of the built up area is the one thing that strikes every guest the most. The old and well-built houses spread along a huge rock mountain which every visitor will get the chance to admire at first sight. It is this imposing rock that the village was named after. At the top of the Rock mountain stands one of the most important religious monuments of the island and unquestionably the most remarkable of the area.It is the church of Glykofylousa Panagia (Our Lady of the Sweet Kiss) which was built around the beginning of the 18th Century. In order to reach the church you will have to go up the 114 rustic steps.A very important sightseeing of the area is the Vareltzidenas House. It was built at the beginning of the 18th Century and is considered a landmark. Its a unique Macedonian style mansion with wood-carver decoration and painting. It was named after the last owner that lived in it and passed away in 1940.Petra offers an amazing beach and its sandbank spreads along 3km while its crystal clear waters invite everyone for a swim and water sports. All guests will be impressed when walking along the picturesque stoned alleys, the cobbled roads among the stoned houses and the numerous shops of the market. And whats more they will get to taste the local goodies in the traditional taverns and of course the ouzo that for over a century now is being produced in the island. Finally the square of Petra, offering one of the most wonderful sunsets in the world, is a unique place for everyone to enjoy his/her coffee, desert or lunch in a magical atmosphere from the amazing colours the sun creates while it vanishes in the sea.
